This is a nationally recognised qualification in the design of heat pump systems, along with their installation and maintenance requirements. The qualification is developed from the National Occupational Standards and is recognised by the Micro-generation Certification Scheme (MCS) registration bodies as an acceptable qualification to join one of their respective schemes.
To provide the knowledge and understanding required to install, commission and maintain groundsource and airsource heat pump systems.
Installers, maintenance businesses, specifiers, building control officers and inspectors and indeed anyone who needs to know about the design and installation requirements of heat pump installations. The course is specifically designed for both experienced operatives and new entrants to this area of work.
PLEASE NOTE: A heat pump course for non-installers is available for anyone not involved in installing heat pumps but who require a background knowledge.
Anyone involved in the design of heat pump installations will also need to undertake the Designing Low Temperature Heating and Hot Water Systems in Dwellings course.
Whilst the qualification is designed for sealed refrigerant systems and precludes the knowledge and competence requirements to break, make and fill split refrigerant circuits which would be covered by separate Refrigerant Handling Qualifications, the knowledge and understanding criteria are still relevant and this qualification could be undertaken by operatives wishing to install splits systems so long as they are also separately qualified in the handling of refrigerants as described in the EU F-GAS regulation and the Fluorinated Greenhouse Gases Regulations.
Anyone wishing to undertake this qualification MUST hold;
Heating installers with experience in installing wet central heating systems, evidenced either by Gas Safe (CENWAT), OFTEC (OFT10-105E or OFT15-108W), MCS (Heat Pump or Solar Thermal Hot Water) or HETAS (H004) registration. The experience in these sectors will normally be 3 years, although where the initial assessment confirms the learner has the necessary skills, knowledge and experience which can be evidenced via Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) assessment this duration may be reduced.
In addition, if not included in the above current certification:
This Qualification would enable registration with MCS for work under the scope of MIS 3005-I (The Heat Pump Standard - Installation). Learners wishing to design installations (MIS3005-D (The Heat Pump Standard - Design)) would need to undertake further training in addition to this qualification such as the LCL Awards Level 3 Award in Low Temperature Heating and Hot Water Systems in Dwellings.
PLEASE NOTE: If you apply for MCS registration for installation only of heat pumps you will be required to demonstrate that you have a contract in place with a qualified design engineer.

Assessments consist of a combination of practical and theory examinations
Candidates who successfully complete the assessment will receive a LCL Awards Level 3 Award in the Installation and Maintenance of Heat Pump Systems (Non-Refrigerant Circuits).
