This is an assessment for those requiring a renewal of their existing qualification in the installation, servicing and maintenance of hot water systems. The assessment helps ensure operatives are aware of the requirements of Approved Document G of the U.K. Building Regulations when carrying out work on hot water systems, including those for G3 Unvented Hot Water Systems.
The qualification is recognised by Competent Person Schemes (CPS) approved to offer a self-certification scheme under Building Regulation Part G, enabling installers of such systems to self-certify the installation. The Microgeneration Certification Scheme (MCS) registration bodies also require this qualification, for those seeking certification for the installation of renewable technologies, such as heat pumps and solar hot water systems.
This assessment determines that the person undertaking it has the relevant knowledge and understanding required to install, commission or service vented or unvented cylinders (or any other mains water fed appliance), in order to self-certify their work in accordance with Part G3 of the Building Regulations.
Unvented hot water certification is a requirement for any plumber who wants to work on unvented hot water systems. Part G3 of the Building Regulations define unvented hot water systems as a “controlled service”. As such, it is a legal requirement that all unvented hot water installations are notified to the local Building Control department.

The assessment is aimed at individuals who have previously held a qualification in unvented and open-vented hot water systems and want to renew it.
Evidence of the existing qualification must be provided by way of a certificate or their operative's card.
This assessment requires the person undertaking it to determine faults on an existing installation, identify relevant components and their requirements and successfully complete an examination based upon hot water systems.
This is an assessment only and should take no more than half a day.
This is an assessment only. A training course is available for anyone who wishes to update their knowledge before undertaking the assessment.
Practical assessment, multiple-choice and written question papers
Candidates who successfully complete the assessment will receive a Cert-ain certificate in Hot Water Safety.
This will enable them to apply to join an appropriate competent persons scheme and self-certify the installation and commissioning of unvented and open-vented hot water cylinders and systems.
It is an open book assessment and it is therefore highly recommended that candidates undertaking it have an appropriate up-to-date reference document
