Case Studies

Since the company was founded in 2005, the South West Assessment and Training team have helped a number of people either start new careers or further their existing ones. Here are just a few of those people who have benefitted from South West Assessment and Training's knowledge and expertise...

Bill Butler

Bill Butler

Bill is a self-employed plumber and heating engineer, who also carries out a great deal of general construction work. As he has got older he realised that he desperately wanted to update his knowledge and skills and contacted South West Assessment and Training on the day before their 2009 Annual Open Day. Kevin recommended that he came in for a chat on the Open Day because if he booked any courses at the event he would receive a 10% discount. Bill did just that and ended up coming back to the centre to undertake the OFTEC oil training and assessment, Unvented Hot Water training, Water Regulations training, the APHC Installation of Solid Fuel Appliances and Heating Systems course and the Combined Electrics course!

Bill says of the time he spent at SWAAT. "The support given to me by South West Assessment and Training was far beyond my expectations. Having been out of a training environment for many years now I was a little apprehensive about attending a college or training centre but knew that I really did need to update my knowledge as regulations and standards are continuously changing.

Since completing my training and assessments any new plumbing and heating systems I install are now designed to a higher standard simply because I am more aware of the new technologies available and the relevant requirements of the appropriate Building Regulations etc. The same applies to any electrical work I undertake.

I would most definitely recommend that anyone looking to either start a career in the plumbing, heating, electrical or renewable energy industries or develop their existing one, speaks to South West Assessment and Training about the way to do so as their advice and support is excellent!"

Joanne Elliott

Joanne Elliott

Joanne is a plumbing and gas servicing engineer employed by construction company Rok Group. Having worked for the company for only a year after completing her plumbing NVQ, Jo came to South West Assessment and Training to undertake the BPEC Foundation Gas course to enable her to carry out installation, commissioning and servicing of gas appliances, as well as the Unvented Hot Water course to commission and service unvented cylinders.

Says Joanne "The knowledge and skills I gained through my training at SWAAT were invaluble. The staff are very friendly and helpful and ensure that the information is put across in a manner which is easy to understand, as well as providing well laid out literature and good practical advice and guidance.

Even calculations (which I sometimes used to find quite difficult at school) were made easier by the way in which the instructors broke down the formulas into simpler formats.

Since successfully completing my gas assessments my job role has changed from plumbing to being a full-time gas engineer. This has meant that my work is now much more varied and therefore more challenging and interesting! I would definitely recommend SWAAT to others!
